Team Spotlight: Finance
|
The Extended Studies Finance Team’s central objective is to serve as the single point of contact for all matters pertaining to accounting, budgeting, contracting, and payroll for both internal and external partners. Committed to customer service, accuracy, and transparency in providing outstanding financial services to the university community, the team prioritizes timely and accurate disclosure of all information that impacts the financial well-being of Extended Studies administered programs.
Finance accomplishes its mission by delivering exceptional support services to participating representatives in all university departments, colleges, and the Office of the Provost. This includes delivering accurate and transparent financial reports to all participating entities, verifying that revenue and expenses are properly recorded for all course offerings, and ensuring that all faculty, staff, and students are paid accurately and on time based on university guidelines and regulations.

Program Updates

Terp Young Scholars is the University of Maryland's pre-college program for academically talented high school students. Open to rising 10th through graduating 12th graders, Terp Scholars provides students an opportunity to pursue an academic interest, explore the university's resources, and earn three University of Maryland credits.
|
The application for Terp Young Scholars (TYS) is now open at tys.umd.edu! Courses fill on a first-come, first-served basis and the application closes on May 1. Faculty and staff can utilize tuition remission for TYS. Please share this information widely with faculty and staff within your unit. Contact tys@umd.edu with any questions.
|
In 2023, Summer Session’s 3- and 6-week sessions returned $17 million in tuition revenue to campus units. Over 90% of summer registrants are current University of Maryland students. More than three quarters of summer sections are offered online.
The Summer Session application and registration open on February 20. You still have time to add sections of popular major and General Education courses for Summer 2024, but we encourage you to contact summer-sched@umd.edu without delay. Once registration opens, students taking courses in the summer typically will not revisit Testudo.
Materials to promote your Summer Session courses will be available in February on the Extended Studies administrative website under Marketing and Communication.

Freshmen Connection saw two significant changes in 2023:
|
- Freshmen Connection students received ELMS/Canvas-based academic advising and successfully self-registered for fall courses.
- Spring 2024 registration was also the first time FC students registered as part of the general student body (by credit). Thanks to all of our campus partners who helped facilitate this important change.
|
Although Winter Scheduling does not open until the summer, now is the time to review your unit’s winter offerings and plan to offer courses that typically have high waitlists/enrollments during the fall and spring.
