Summer Session 2024
This year’s Summer Session starts on May 28. Each year, Summer Session courses allow thousands of University of Maryland students to make progress towards their degree or to lighten their fall semester course load by fulfilling General Education or major requirements over the summer.
Big Question
In recognition of the adoption of the Big Question General Education category, Extended Studies has a big question for you.
How could more students be encouraged to enroll in your college’s/school’s Summer Session courses?
Summer Session in Comparison
Summer Session Trends
In 2019 only 50% of seats were offered online. Covid caused a nearly complete shift to online course delivery. While more in-person courses have returned, the trend is still in favor of online instruction.
On average, 97% of students who register for Summer Session are current University of Maryland students. As of May 10, 2024, 8% of all students who have registered for Summer Session 2024 are freshmen, 21% are sophomores, 33.92% are juniors and 25.05% are seniors.
To date, the top 5 courses with the highest registrations are:
- ENGL393: Technical Writing (General Education) - 276 seats, 21 sections
- ENGL394: Business Writing (General Education) - 148 seats, 9 sections
- STAT400/DATA400: Applied Probability and Statistics I - 135 seats, 7 sections
- COMM107: Oral Communication: Principles and Practices (General Education) - 132 seats, 7 sections
- BGMT380: Business Law I - 127 seats, 3 sections
Summer Session 2024 offers 915 courses with 4,196 sections in Session I and 716 courses with 4,057 sections in Session II. Approximately the same number of courses were offered in 2023, although some additional sections are available this year.

Support: Marketing and Communication Resources

A Summer Session 2024 toolkit is available on the Extended Studies administrative website. It includes social graphics, widgets, a television and website slide, and sample copy for promoting courses offered this summer by your college or school.
For those offering graduate programs that are administered by Extended Studies, a Professional Graduate Programs toolkit for marketing your program is available. If you are offering an undergraduate program at Shady Grove, the Shady Grove toolkit provides social graphics and sample copy to promote your program.

Winter Session enrollment opens in mid-October. This three-week session typically sees over 5,000 enrollments, most of which are current University of Maryland students. In 2023, Winter Session returned $6.6 million in tuition revenue to campus units. Academic units can begin scheduling sections of popular major and General Education courses for Winter 2025 in early July through the start of August. Over 90% of courses offered during Winter Session are online. Please contact winter-sched@umd.edu if you need assistance.
