Terp Young Scholars
The application for Terp Young Scholars (TYS), the University of Maryland's pre-college program for academically talented high school students, is now open! Since 2002, over 8,000 students have previewed the college experience, immersing themselves in academic pursuits and taking advantage of campus resources.
TYS offers a unique opportunity for students to engage in collegiate-level coursework, explore their academic interests, and earn three college credits. Rising sophomores through graduating seniors choose either the online or the commuter program option. Students who opt for the commuter program enjoy campus resources such as RecWell facilities, TerpZone, and more. All students have access to Extended Studies professional staff during the hours of 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. EST Monday through Friday.
TYS added a range of exciting new courses to its Summer 2025 offerings: Forensic Sciences, eSports, Ecological Entrepreneurship, Neuroscience, Creativity in Online Communication, Environmental Politics, Principles of Python Programming and Geocomputing, and Women, Art and Culture. A complete list of available courses can be found at go.umd.edu/tyscourses.
Courses for the summer are filled on a first-come, first-served basis, so we urge interested students to apply early. The application deadline is June 1. Applications for Summer 2025 are currently up over 60% from last year.
If your academic unit is interested in learning more about offering a course in Terp Young Scholars 2026, please contact us at tys@umd.edu. An informational session will be held in September and the Terp Young Scholars Course Proposal Form is due at the beginning of October.

Winter and Spring 2025 Appointments
Extended Studies continues to address and prepare all Winter Term, Winter Session, Spring Semester, and Spring Term appointments in the new Workday HCM system. The Finance Team will contact each department's business office directly regarding appointments that require immediate action.
EXST Finance is aware that there have been several issues related to payroll, and our team continues to investigate with the appropriate departments to resolve all problems. We appreciate everyone’s patience as we continue to troubleshoot and determine new and improved methods to complete our payroll processing within the Workday HCM and Finance systems.

Summer Session and Term 2025 Budgets

The deadlines for entry and approval of budgets are as follows:
Extended Studies requests that departments complete all budget entry and routing for approval within the Budgets and Contracts System. Please refer to the system guide, if needed. If you do not have access to the system, send an email to exst-finance@umd.edu with your name, Directory ID, department prefix, and your role in the process (Budget Creator, Department Approver, or College Approver). EXST Finance will set up your access and notify you once you are able to view your department(s) in the system.

All budgeting and contracting inquiries should be directed to exst-finance@umd.edu, with the email addressed to the Business Manager contact for your college.

Program Updates
Winter Session 2025 saw a 6% increase in enrollment from 2024. While winter scheduling does not open until the summer, now is the time to review your unit’s winter offerings and plan to offer courses that typically have high waitlists/enrollments during the fall and spring. If you have questions about which courses might be a good fit for Winter Session, contact us at winter@umd.edu.
Enrollment grew by 4% in 2024, generating $18 million in tuition revenue. Summer Session 2025 registration opened on February 18. It is not too late to add sections of popular major and General Education courses for Summer 2025, but we encourage you to contact summer-sched@umd.edu without delay. Once registration opens, students taking courses in the summer typically do not revisit Testudo.
Over 16,000 students have started their University of Maryland undergraduate studies through Freshmen Connection. Freshmen Connection has returned over $74 million in revenue to academic units durings its 19 years.
Remember to include spring admits in your new student recruitment efforts! Nearly 90% of spring-admitted freshmen who accept admission to the university opt to participate in Freshmen Connection (FC) during the fall semester. Spring admits should be recruited on the same schedule as fall-admitted freshmen. If you would like to discuss recruitment strategies, contact us at fc@umd.edu.

Professional Graduate Programs
- Spring graduate program enrollment is up 40% compared to this time last year. The increase is largely driven by strong international student interest in Science Academy programs, the addition of the MS in Computer Science program, and incremental growth across the majority of graduate programs administered by Extended Studies.
- Fall 2024 distribution is currently on track to be sent by mid-March.
- Summer 2025 scheduling opened on September 9, 2024.
- Fall 2025 scheduling opened on September 30, 2024.
- Spring 2026 scheduling will open on April 7, 2025.
- The Graduate School now has a Google Doc with all of its upcoming admissions deadlines in one place! The TerpEngage home/landing page also links to the document when you log in.
- Semester and 12-week term calendars are published several years in advance. You can view current and future academic calendars on the Office of the Provost’s website.
- In 2024, MOOC enrollments in University of Maryland’s 100 offerings climbed 25% over the previous year. Nearly 1,200 daily enrollments resulted in 428, 560 enrollments overall.
- Public Policy’s Cybersecurity for Everyone by Dr. Charles Harry leads the way, averaging nearly 600 enrollees on Coursera daily. This past fall, it became Coursera’s #1 Cybersecurity offering among 300 courses when it surpassed Google’s course. To date, Cybersecurity for Everyone has enrolled more than 432,000 learners globally and is among the Top 125 Coursera courses of all time.

Spring 2026 scheduling for graduate, post-baccalaureate, and undergraduate programs (USG/USMSM/Online) will begin in early April.

Extended Studies is pleased to announce its transition to TerpEngage (Salesforce) for email communications. This move aligns us with Enrollment Management, The Graduate School, and other campus partners already utilizing TerpEngage's CRM platform. We have already seen success with TerpEngage for our web forms (including five program applications, the Freshmen Connection enrollment form, and the Exception to Policy form), and we are excited to bring those same advantages to our email communications.
