Offered through the School of Languages, Literatures, and Cultures in the College of Arts and Humanities, the Summer Language Institutes (SLI) provide immersive language-learning experiences in Korean, Arabic, and Persian at the beginner, intermediate, and advanced levels. Throughout the 2-week, 5-week, or 6-week program, SLI students engage in rigorous language instruction augmented by various cultural activities and events that increase their knowledge of the target language.

Housed within Extended Studies, Terp Young Scholars is the University of Maryland’s premier credit-bearing pre-college program.

For the last two years, the Joseph and Rebecca Meyerhoff Center for Jewish Studies has partnered with Extended Studies to offer Tzohar: A Window to Jewish Studies, a customized non-credit program focused on the secular academic study of Jewish history, texts, culture, and society. Extended Studies helps ARHU create the Memorandum of Understanding, acts as the university's signature authority, invoices the external partner, and distributes program revenue.
Since 2010, more than 10,000 ARHU students have taken advantage of Summer Session and enrolled in 36,000+ ARHU seats, the third most seats of any UMD college or school. Extended Studies will support ARHU’s proposed Bachelor of Arts in Public Service Interpreting and Translation once it is approved.

Taught by UMD faculty and staff, these non-credit opportunities include more than 100 MOOCs (Massive Open Online Courses) delivered via Coursera and edX, and more than 60 non-credit courses on Open Learning. Extended Studies supports ARHU in offering various non-credit language courses in Russian, Chinese, and Persian that are available for federal employees.

Jamie Stednitz
Manager, Undergraduate Programs
|
Jamie joined Extended Studies in 2014. She focuses on programs that serve pre-college students, first-year freshmen, and transfer students at the University of Maryland. Her professional background includes working as a career counselor, academic advisor, and service learning coordinator. Her experiences have allowed her to gain an appreciation for students' growth both in and outside of the classroom.
Jamie joined Extended Studies in 2014. She focuses on programs that serve pre-college students, first-year freshmen, and transfer students at the University of Maryland. Extended Studies continues to address and prepare all Summer Session and Summer Term jobs within the new Workday HCM system. The Finance Team will contact each department's business office directly regarding jobs that require immediate action.

We are aware that there have been several issues related to payroll, and our team continues to investigate with the appropriate departments to resolve all problems. We appreciate everyone’s patience as we continue to troubleshoot and determine new and improved methods to complete our payroll processing within the Workday HCM and Finance systems.

Winter Session enrollment opens in mid-October. Academic units can schedule sections of popular major and general education courses for Winter Session 2026 from July 8 through early August. Contact winter-sched@umd.edu if you need assistance.

Academic units can begin scheduling sections of popular major and General Education courses for Winter 2026 in early July through the start of August. Bulk Enrollment, a new functionality on Open Learning, will permit UMD to take advantage of marketplace trends to better serve clients who wish to enroll multiple learners at once. A pilot is currently underway, with any additional testing and rollout to follow shortly.
