In this issue, we focus on the School of Public Health (SPH) and how its partnership with Extended Studies is helping to promote and protect health for all through interdisciplinary education and experiential learning. Extended Studies provides administrative support services for a range of revenue generating learning opportunities.

Summer Session

Summer Language Institute and Project Go

Approximately 900 public health students enroll in courses each summer. Since 2010, more than 12,500 public health students (fifth highest of all colleges) have taken advantage of Summer Session to gain ground on graduation or lighten their fall/spring course load.

Offered through the School of Languages, Literatures, and Cultures in the College of Arts and Humanities, the Summer Language Institute (SLI) provides immersive language-learning experiences in Korean, Arabic, and Persian at the beginner, intermediate, and advanced levels. Throughout the 2-week, 5-week, or 6-week program, SLI students engage in rigorous language instruction augmented by various cultural activities and events that increase their knowledge of the target language.


Project Global Officer (Project GO), which is embedded within SLI,  promotes critical language education, study abroad, and intercultural dialogue opportunities through language study for Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC) students. Extended Studies supports SLI and Project Go by providing scheduling, registration, and admission assistance; tuition and fee management; instructor contracting and payment; revenue collection and distribution; and marketing and communication support.

Course topics of School of Public Health Summer Session offerings include Foundations of Public Health, Biostatistics for Public Health Practice, A Public Health Perspective: Introduction to Environmental Health, Human Sexuality, and Medical Terminology.

Terp Young Scholars

Now in its 25th year, Terp Young Scholars (TYS) has featured courses from the School of Public Health since the program’s inception in 2002. Over 480 high school students have participated in School of Public Health TYS courses. This year, the Department of Global, Environmental, and Occupational Health is offering two TYS courses: Exploring Clinical Public Health Research (in person) and Our Planet, Our Health: Solving How Our World Makes Us Sick (or Healthy) (online).

Since 2010, more than 10,000 ARHU students have taken advantage of Summer Session and enrolled in 36,000+ ARHU seats, the third most seats of any UMD college or school. Extended Studies oversees the undergraduate admissions process for the Summer Session and provides scheduling assistance, tuition and fee management, revenue collection and distribution, instructor contracting and payment, marketing campaigns that target current and visiting students, and also acts as a resource for compliance with university regulations, policies, and procedures.

Winter Session

Summer Language Institute and Project Go

In Winter Session 2026, students filled more than 6,000 seats, the highest seat count for Winter Session ever! Students from the School of Public Health filled approximately 10% of those seats. Since 2010, nearly 9,000 public health students have taken advantage of Winter Session offerings, the third most of any college/school. Nearly all courses are offered 100% online to meet students where they are and take them where they want to go.

Freshmen Connection

Since 2010, students from across all majors have filled more than 2,500 public health course seats through Freshmen Connection. In 2025, 70 public health majors participated in Freshmen Connection. Among declared majors, the School of Public Health regularly enrolls the second largest number of Freshmen Connection students.

Professional Graduate Programs

Extended Studies administers a variety of online graduate degrees and certificates designed for working professionals who want to advance their careers in public health and health services. The programs are flexible, allowing full-time or part-time study with minimal disruption to work or personal life. Collectively, the programs enroll nearly 500 students annually.

The School of Public Health offers a variety of Open Learning courses such as Health Literacy for Community Health Workers, Advocacy in Action, and Pharmacy Benefit Management, as well as several Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs).

In January 2026, the School of Public Health launched its Public Health Leadership specialization on Coursera. The three-course series of MOOCs brings together distinguished school leadership, featuring the current dean and the founding dean among its instructors and marking the first time a sitting dean has taught a UMD MOOC. The specialization begins with Public Health Leadership Fundamentals, taught by Brian Castrucci, President and CEO of the de Beaumont Foundation, followed by Dean Boris Lushniak’s Public Health Leadership: Leadership in Crisis, and concludes with founding Dean Bob Gold’s Applied Public Health Informatics for Leaders.

The School of Public Health also expanded its MOOC portfolio with a follow-up offering, Our Global FEWture: Cultivating Food-Energy-Water Solutions. This standalone course explores public health through a global sustainability lens, examining how climate change affects food, energy, and water systems, and the resulting impacts on population health worldwide. The course aligns with multiple Grand Challenges areas, including Climate Change and Sustainability, Food Insecurity, Access to Clean Water, Clean and Renewable Energy, and Global Health, while advancing UMD’s educational mission.

Michelle Harris

Program Coordinator,

Enrollment and Student Services

Michelle joined Extended Studies in September 2019, following one year with the Alumni Association at UMD and nearly four years at Howard University’s School of Dentistry. She holds a B.S. in Sociology from Bowie State University and an M.Ed. in Higher Education Administration with concentrations in Management and Leadership from Frostburg State University. With a combined total of almost 12 years in the higher education field, her professional background includes academic management, course/curriculum development, program management, international application/admission management, alumni membership, and serving on various committees such as the Academic Executive Committee and Student Appeals, while at Howard University.

 

In her current role, Michelle manages application/admission processing, registration, and student support for the Science in the Evening (SIE) post-baccalaureate program, Summer and Winter Session, Terp Young Scholars, and Freshmen Connection. Extended Studies’ mission to “Keep Learning” drives her passion for higher education, as does the paramount importance of students’ success to the overall mission of higher education.

Winter Session

Winter Session 2026 saw a 2% increase in enrollment from 2025. Students continue to seek out online courses that fulfill general education or major requirements. While winter scheduling does not open until the summer, now is the time to review your unit’s winter offerings and plan to offer courses that typically have high enrollments and waitlists during the fall and spring. If you have questions about which courses might be a good fit for Winter Session, contact us at winter@umd.edu.

Winter Session enrollment opens in mid-October. This three-week session typically sees over 5,000 enrollments, most of which are current University of Maryland students.  Academic units can begin scheduling sections of popular major and General Education courses for Winter 2026 in early July through the start of August. Over 90% of courses offered during Winter Session are online. Please contact winter-sched@umd.edu if you need assistance.

Summer Session

Summer Session registration opens March 3. Enrollment grew by 3% in 2025, generating $28.5 million in tuition revenue. It is not too late to add sections of popular major and general education courses for Summer 2026, but we encourage you to contact summer-sched@umd.edu without delay. Once registration opens, students taking courses in Summer typically do not revisit Testudo.

Terp Young Scholars

The application for Terp Young Scholars (TYS), the University of Maryland's pre-college program for academically talented high school students, is now open! Now in its 25th year, close to 9,000 students have experienced life at the University, immersing themselves in academic pursuits and campus resources. TYS offers a unique opportunity for rising 10th through graduating 12th-grade students to engage in college-level coursework, explore their academic interests, and earn three college credits from the University of Maryland.

New this year, the College of Education is offering a course for current 8th graders/rising high school freshmen. Wordsmith: Level Up Your Writing! is designed to help students strengthen their writing skills for high school.

Freshmen Connection

Remember to include spring admits in your new student recruitment efforts! Nearly 90% of spring-admitted freshmen opt to participate in Freshmen Connection during the fall semester. Spring 2026 Jobs

Extended Studies continues to address and prepare all Spring Semester and Term jobs within the Workday HCM system. The Finance Team will contact each department's business office directly regarding jobs that require immediate action.

 

Summer 2026 Budgets

The Summer 2026 budget cycle is ongoing. We encourage all department budget creators to continue entering and routing their course budgets as soon as their course schedules are verified, so that the budget approval process can be completed sooner. Budget approvals and instructional contract generation will begin at the end of February and continue through the Spring semester.

Extended Studies has opened the Fall 2026 budget system early. Latin & Greek Post-Baccalaureate Program

We are excited to announce that the application for the new Latin and Greek Post-Baccalaureate Program launched in December and applications have already been received. We look forward to welcoming the first cohort in Fall 2026.

Winter Session enrollment opens in mid-October. This three-week session typically sees over 5,000 enrollments, most of which are current University of Maryland students.  Academic units can begin scheduling sections of popular major and General Education courses for Winter 2026 in early July through the start of August. Over 90% of courses offered during Winter Session are online. Please contact winter-sched@umd.edu if you need assistance.

  • Fall/Term I 2026 is scheduled to open September 30
