Greetings,
The State of Maryland Central Payroll Bureau (CPB) is migrating their payroll system from an outdated legacy system to a Workday-based platform, which will transition the current Statewide Personnel System (SPS) to the new Statewide Personnel and Payroll System (SPPS) on January 1, 2027. CPB sent an announcement email to all State employees launching Payroll Made Powerful: Countdown to Go Live. Employees should expect additional emails from CPB over the next few months and should carefully review these communications for potential actions and updates from the State project.
What It Means for UMD Employees
Currently, UMD employees access the Statewide Personnel System (SPS) only to manage benefits. Beginning in January 2027, functionality in SPS will be expanded beyond benefits, and employees will use the improved State Personnel and Payroll System or SPPS portal for state payroll activities such as direct deposit forms, withholding forms, payslips, and more.
What It Means for UMD Workday
Your departmental HR Analysts will continue to use UMD Workday for all HR transactions including: HR processing, time entry/leave, and learning. You will continue to access UMD Workday with your current UMD credentials.
What’s Next
A website dedicated to the CPB implementation project with updates specific to our University employees and users will launch next month. Our teams along with DIT-ERP will also jointly coordinate communications, knowledge resources, and support activities over the next few months.
We look forward to sharing more information about this change.
In collaboration,
Lillian Nash, Controller
