This busy spring semester, please remember your safety and security should always be a top priority. Here are five simple tips to keep you and your fellow Terps safe.
|
|
1. Protect your House
Never allow anyone who you can't identify as a resident of your building into your residence hall, including elevators and stairwells.
Always keep your room door locked when you are asleep or out of your room, and always carry your room keys and university ID card with you. |
|
|
2. Avoid Walking Alone
After dark, walk with friends, ride Shuttle-UM or request a walking safety escort from the UMD Police Department 24/7/365.
Download the UMD Guardian app, which allows you to invite "Guardians" - friends, family or UMPD - to virtually walk you home.
|
|
|
|
3. Stay Alert & Aware
Know your surroundings and the locations of blue light phones on campus.
Watch out for friends and neighbors, and help them do the same for you.
Plan your route across campus, always using populated, well-lit paths.
Trust your instincts. Stay alert to people and circumstances around you.
Register your cell phone for campus safety alerts at the UMD Alert Website

4. In case of a Fire
1) Sound Alarm: If you suspect smoke or fire, pull the closest fire alarm pull station.
2) Get Out: Immediately exit using stairwells, never assume false alarm. Take your mask and maintain distancing as you exit and while gathering at designated assembly areas.
3) Call Police: Call UMPD at (301) 405-3333 or #3333 from your cell phone to report the alarm.
Please review the residence hall emergency procedures (pdf) on important fire safety details and expectations.
Learn additional information on the fire safety webpage. |

5. See Something, Say Something
Immediately report suspicious person(s) or activity to University of Maryland Police Department at (301) 405-3333 (or #3333 from your mobile phone).
