Program Highlights and News |
Extended Studies (EXST) currently administers professional graduate programs in 8 out of 12 colleges. In 2022, EXST-administered graduate programs enrolled approximately 1,000 students and returned nearly $9 million in tuition revenue to academic units. |
- Revenue has increased 110% over the last two years and is projected to grow an additional 18% in 2023.
- On average, academic units retain 65% of tuition revenue from self-support graduate programs, after all instructional costs and administrative fees are paid.
- Effective Fall 2023, EXST will begin administering the graduate programs in the EdTerps Learning Academy (formerly the Office of Innovation and Partnerships) in the College of Education.
- Half of the graduate programs administered by EXST are delivered 100% online.
- Have an idea for a self-support graduate program? Extended Studies recently purchased Analyst, a tool by Lightcast, to help you analyze the supply, demand, and competition for a proposed self-support program. Contact Extended Studies to request a meeting.

POST-BACCALAUREATE PROGRAMS |
Post-baccalaureate programs begin after a student has completed an undergraduate degree and are specifically designed to support the transition to a professional school, such as a medical school, as well as enhance an applicant's competitiveness for admission. |
- Post-baccalaureate programs experienced a 22% increase in course registrations in 2021; however, registration numbers returned to pre-COVID levels in 2022.
- Due to a strong US labor market, we expect post-baccalaureate program enrollment will remain flat or decrease slightly in 2023.
- Extended Studies is looking to collaborate with academic units to launch a new post-baccalaureate program that would satisfy prerequisite requirements for quantitative graduate programs in STEM fields. Contact Extended Studies if you are interested in partnering on this exciting new program.

Extended Studies is authorized to sign Memorandums of Understanding (MOUs) related to Executive Education if the sponsor (i.e., external organization) is a private entity or state or local government, and the agreement does not include any federal government funds or federal government terms and conditions. |
- Since 2020, Extended Studies has executed nearly 30 Executive Education MOUs.
- Executive Education is growing. The total revenue returned to academic units for the first two quarters of FY23 surpassed the total revenue distributed to academic units in the previous two years combined.
- Using Analyst, a tool by Lightcast, Extended Studies can help academic units identify and aggregate in-demand skills found in an organization’s job postings. With these data, academic units can design data-driven Executive Education offerings tailored to meet the specific organizational needs.

The UMD MOOC program supports the administration and creation of Massive Open Online Courses across 8 colleges. The program’s purpose is global outreach. In 2022, the program enrolled over 300,000 learners globally.
|
- The program, which offers units financial support for designing MOOCs, has served nearly 4 million learners worldwide. Program revenue has grown over 400% in the past 4 years. Approximately one-third of program revenue is used to fund grants for units to develop new MOOC programs. After expenses, the remaining revenue is distributed to the campus units that created the MOOCs.
- To date, UMD’s MOOC offerings have attracted partnerships with other institutions and corporations, including a Fortune 200 recently signing on to explore potential new MOOCs and to partner on other future UMD program offerings (beyond MOOCs).
- UMD accolades (for courses of the highest quality and for creating the most global #1-ranked new releases) have spread across the program as it grows to span colleges: 5 units across 4 UMD colleges have topped lists for the most popular and highest-quality offerings among institutions worldwide.
- With the launch of UMD’s Strategic Plan last year, the MOOC Advisory Board approved new courses to educate globally on four Grand Challenges: Environmental Sustainability (in an era of Climate Change), Cybersecurity, and to combat the twin pandemics of COVID and Racism.
- Current UMD MOOC offerings can be found on Coursera and EdX.

Open Learning houses UMD’s non-credit course offerings and events to benefit the general public, faculty, staff, and students. Non-credit course offerings by 11 Colleges and Schools, as well as administrative units and the Offices of the President and the Provost, enrolled over 51,000 attendees last year. |
- The School of Public Health gained national recognition with their Open Learning offering, COVID19 Rapid Response Training for Barbers and Stylists: From Vaccine Hesitancy to Vaccine Confidence, when the White House adopted it as part of their Shots at the Shop initiative.
- Other familiar recent courses are President Pines’ TerrapinSTRONG initiative and Division of IT’s Defend Your Shell security awareness training.
- Since 2019, Extended Studies has overseen 700% enrollment growth in the program. 120 new courses were approved in 2022.
- Contact Extended Studies with opportunities or questions or submit a Non-Credit Course Application.
