The mission of the Marketing and Communication Team is to promote and enhance awareness of Extended Studies administered programs by implementing comprehensive annual marketing campaigns for Winter Session, Summer Session, Terp Young Scholars, Freshmen Connection, Post-Baccalaureate Programs, and Professional Graduate Programs. New additions this year are campaigns for Undergraduate Programs at Shady Grove and Continuing Education (Open Learning). MARKETING AND COMMUNICATION
|
The Extended Studies Marketing and Communication Team develops and executes strategic marketing plans in-house and in collaboration with Kivvit, the full-service marketing agency that serves as an extension of the Extended Studies team. Campaigns primarily focus on promoting programs, brand awareness, and enrollment marketing.
|
- Kivvit developed three online courses that cover the basics of digital marketing. These courses aim to provide program directors and staff with information on how to promote their programs and access resources to run a campaign effectively. The courses are available for free on Open Learning:
- Academic units can access the University of Maryland/Extended Studies contract with Kivvit to obtain agency services for marketing. Email the Marketing Team for details.
- Extended Studies and Kivvit are preparing the 2024 Winter Session marketing campaign (October-December). A toolkit will be sent to school, college, and department communicators in early October to promote their course offerings. The toolkit will include creative assets and sample copy for social media, a website and TV slide, widgets, and a flier.
- Extended Studies and Kivvit are currently also preparing the 2023-24 Professional Graduate Programs marketing campaign (November-April). A toolkit with customizable marketing materials will be provided to school, college, and department communicators later this fall.
- The Terp Young Scholars pre-college program marketing campaign launches in January 2024, right after winter break.
- The Summer Session 2024 marketing campaign launches on February 1, 2024.
- Freshmen Connection communications for Fall 2024 go out to spring-admitted students in early February and throughout the spring semester.

The student-facing Extended Studies website is the primary online resource for information about Extended Studies administered programs and guidance on how to apply and register. The administrative website supports academic units with internal program information, administrative guidelines, and resources.

Program Updates
|
Winter Session registration opens on October 17. The Winter Schedule of Classes is slated to post on September 8. Students often view this only once. It is imperative that all course information appears before the Schedule of Classes goes live. For information on scheduling a Winter Session course, contact winter-sched@umd.edu.
The course delivery format must be included in the Schedule of Classes and cannot be changed by the instructor. Asynchronous courses do not require scheduled meeting times. Online courses offered synchronously must adhere to the published days/times.
In Review: In Winter Session 2023, 402 course sections were offered, with enrollments exceeding 5,500. Over 95% of Winter Session registrants were current University of Maryland students, and over 90% of Winter Session courses were offered online. Winter Session enrollments were evenly split between General Education and major/elective courses.
|
Summer Session scheduling instructions will be available on the Extended Studies administrative website in September. Online scheduling in SIS opens today, September 11. The deadline to complete online course scheduling is October 20. After this date, all scheduling updates must be submitted via email to summer-sched@umd.edu.
In Review: Summer Session 2023 enrollment saw a 3% increase over 2022. Demand remains high for courses that fulfill major and multiple General Education requirements.
|
Instructions on proposing a TYS course may be found on the Extended Studies administrative website (see Course Selection and Scheduling Process). If your academic unit is considering participating in Terp Young Scholars for the first time, we encourage you to contact us at tys@umd.edu no later than September 25.
In Review: This summer, just under 250 students participated in Terp Young Scholars (TYS), the University of Maryland's for-credit pre-college program for academically talented high school students.
|
Courses in Freshmen Connection typically roll over from year to year. Academic units interested in proposing new courses or adjusting existing courses for Fall 2024 should contact fc@umd.edu before the end of October.
